Ok here is the "Rest of the story"
FRIDAY- May 17, 2009
DB and I arrived at our uncle's (his name is Hardy) place in Spokane about 1 PM Friday. We hunted his property for a while and didn't get any thing, we saw some birds across the ravine but couldn't get to them. We packed up and headed over to a piece of property owned by one of Hardy's friends and hunted till dark, no luck, we saw some birds but couldn't get to them.
We headed back to the campfire there and proceeded to drink like fish and bull sh*t with the property owner, her uncle, and brother who were there hunting turkeys also. We made it back to Hardy's house about 10 to 10:30 went in the house and got something to eat, kept drinking, and went to bed about midnight.
Saturday-May-18, 2009
Hardy got up about 5:30 AM and I followed about 30 minutes later, we made coffee, started breakfast, and were standing there cooking when I saw something move outside the kitchen window, 3 Hens and 1 HUGE TOM walked through the front yard!!!
I started running around yelling, "Where are the guns, where are the guns?" it was just then I realized that the guns were still locked in DB's truck!!!!! I ran down the hall, busted in the bedroom where DBAppraiser was still passed out and shouted, " Where are the truck keys?" he replied "Leave me alone!!" I then explained that the turkeys were in the front yard and that I needed the keys to get the guns. He said they were in his coat pocket but he couldn't remember where his coat was.
I ran out looking for the coat, meanwhile Hardy had found another one of his shotguns, loaded it, and handed it to me. I tried to sneak out the back of the house and get to the birds who were now eating gravel next to the road. As I tried to sneak around Hardy's truck to get a shot the 3 hens got spooked and started moving back into the trees and the Tom was following, I never got close enough to take a shot. Botched opportunity #1!!!
I went back in side finished breakfast and we were loading up about 10 AM to go up to Pend Orielle county to try hunting up there. DBAppraiser walks out to the truck, puts his coat in the cab and closes the door, "Slam" instantly following the door slam that HUGE TOM answers the truck door with a big gobble!!!! DB grabbed his gun and snuck over to the edge of my uncle's yard and crouched down, I walked out the front door just in time to see him shoot that Big Tom!!!
1 Bird in the cooler!!!
We cleaned it and hung it up to cool and headed out. We drove up to Pend Oreille and didn't see any birds so we came back, got something to eat and went back out to hunt the creek bottom on Hardy's property. We pulled off onto a cat track and drove down about 100 yards and "BAM" there they were, a group of turkeys right in the middle of the Cat Track!! We stopped and got out and tried to get closer but, we spooked the birds when we drove in and I missed when I shot at the Big Tom in that group as he crossed the Cat Track. Damn, botched opportunity #2!!!
We jumped that group of birds one more time that evening but never got off a shot, I was starting to get pissed as I was now thinking that I was going to go home birdless!!!
We packed up and headed for another of Hardy's friends property and as we turned off of the highway we almost ran over 4 Toms that were walking down the road!!! They ran in to someone's front yard and turned to look at us while we drove away.
We couldn't shoot them since they were in someone's front yard since the house was right behind them. More birds gone and I am still birdless!! We arrived at the property and hunted till dark, no birds, DAMN!!!
Went back to the house, ate dinner, drank some more and went to bed.
Sunday- May 19, 2009
I woke up at 5:45 AM got dressed and headed out to hunt the creek bottom, called a few times, heard a couple of gobbles but nothing close, got back to the house about 8 AM and had breakfast with Hardy and DBAppraiser.
After breakfast we loaded up and drove back down the Cat Track and parked, DB slammed the truck door and another Tom answered it with a really loud GOBBLE!!!! They were only about 50 yards away up the hill!!! We saw a couple of hens, and REALLY BIG TOM, and a couple of Jakes. We carefully got out of site and Hardy started to call the birds, they answered but didn't seem real interested so, I started to work my turkey call at the same time and the whole situation changed!! All of the sudden the 2 Jakes started down the hill right towards us, we kept calling and they kept coming until they were about 50 feet away. Hardy and I counted to 3 and then opened fire!!! He shot left and I shot straight ahead, "BAM" 2 dead birds!!
We don't know for sure but we are pretty sure that DBAppraiser and Uncle Hardy ended up shooting the same bird.
We tried to lure the Big Tom down but, he wanted nothing to do with us after that!!
3 Birds in the cooler!!!
We threw the birds in the truck, headed back to the house, cleaned them, and hung them up to cool and went in for lunch.
We went back out after lunch to try and get that BIG TOM but he wouldn't come out and play with us.
Went went back to the house showered, packed up and headed for home, all in all it was a good weekend!!!
4 shots fired, 3 dead birds!!!!
Not bad for a couple of city boys!!!
