Rabbit hutch

Post by Hairlipangler on 7th July 2009, 6:07 am

Made a hutch for my neighbor. She's a single mom and somebody gave her 2 male rabbits. Soon as they were old enogh, they started to fight, chew each others nuts off, nasty. She'd never had rabbits before, and she had them in a freekin rubbermaid container for a 3 weeks.

So one of my sons vollenteered to make them a hutch. Actually, he vollenteered me to make the hutch, cause he took off hiking with his girlfriend for the day and left me holding the bag. Had some hardware cloth here, but did the whole thing, hardware and all for @$40. (6) 2 x 6, and one sheet of plywood later and it looked like this.

It took six hours to make it, a few more to paint it with help from a friend. Finished it with Geko deck coating, right over the raw wood. The poop tray is there so she can move it into the garage in winter. I left any wood they could chew on unfinished, wrapped the wire on the inside of the frame to keep the finish away from them. Worked slick, the Geko really creates a super tough finish. I used it on my floorboards, bench tops, and transom wood in my boat. Pricey at $90 a gallon, but it was left over from a job, and was already paid for. I like free. Free is good.
