No kidding we are being flooded with them, I look forward to them every year but after a few weeks of them I have almost had enough. The wife did find a pear shaped japanese (I think) tomatoe that has a real nice different flavor, when ripe it's almost purple/black.

Me too... I've been knee deep in em for weeks. Now, my spuds on the other hand didn't do too well. I think the hot, dry summer has switched things around so for us gardeners this year!

Worse gardening year for us in the past 24 years. Mad

Our broccoli and cauliflower didn't grow and was the lowest production crop that we have ever had even though we planted twice as much as normal. We planted 168 broccoli and 86 cauiflower starts, and only a couple had good heads on them. Most of them just shot up and started going to seed. Our zucchini which normally produces bummer crops, barely produced us anything this year. Our spinach didn't grow and what did, went to seed just like our radishes did. Our spuds, pickles and cucumbers were great. Our Garlic was only so-so.

I planted the wife's tomatoes in planter boxes this year and put them on the patio and they did fantastic. I think that the severe winter (16 inches or more of snow here) that we had and then the early heat wave, did a real number on our garden. We live in a cool shaded area and the ground never did dry up when we planted. The soil turned to clay on top and nothing took hold. The spuds and cucumber went in a couple weeks later and the soil was worked up pretty good. Next year, if its like this one was, I am not going to put the old garden in as early. Normally, we have it in by May 10 th.

My friend just below our place put his garden in about two weeks later then we did and his garden did pretty good.

CFM- Its weird how things vary so much.. I had a great garden year other than my spuds. The plants grew great, but there aren't many spuds under ground. I had Broccoil and cauliflower coming out my ears. Spinach, lettuce, and garlic did well too. I'm still getting lettuce, chard, carrots, and onions.

I just started round two. Did more lettuce, beans, and broccoli. going to add spinach, radishes, and more carrots today.

I think the heat made my area better, and yours worse. While it was 90 down down in your area, it was upper 70's in mine!

Actually, we like to cut tomatoes and cucumbers and put them into vinegar and oil. Them salt, pepper, and some italian seasoning. let em sit for about a half hour. then serve WITH bbq!

We too, have way too many cherry tomatos. I like this one. In a bowl mix these up: 15 or 20 cherry tomatos cut in half, 1/2 cup freshly chopped basil and about 10 or 15 little mozzarella balls. (those ones in the plastic container in water) Add a simple vinegrette dressing with a sprinkle of kosher salt and some fresh ground pepper.

Learned a few new tidbits from this years bumper tomato crop. I found it makes a huge difference where you buy your starts. We've been using the stock versions from HD or Lowe's, not this year. Went to a local nursery, paid @$1 more, and I will never go anywhere else after this. The plants all started out bigger and grew faster than we anticipated. The wife wanted them in planters this year, to take advantage of the exposure in the front yard. The damn plants grew so much we had to transplant one of them right as it started to bear fruit, because of root bound. I thought it was dead for sure, but even though the leaves looked real bad, the transplant never seemed to bother the fruit.

The first round of Roma's all had damage on the bottom. Don't know what that was from, but we were told to pick them off as soon as we saw damage, and the rest would be fine. Damn if it didn't work.

With all the hot nights during the heat spell, we found that the tomato's didn't ripen so well. Grew like a mofo but just wouldn't get much riper. A friend told us they need the evening cool to ripen. Made sense, and after it cooled down they ripened normally.

Anywhoo.... we eat a few, and put the rest in a salsa basket. Then once a week we make and can salsa. We get about 4 quarts a week during the peak period. The yellow pear tomato's are too sweet for salsa, a few of them's fine but I wouldn't use too many. Nobody really likes them, so I think next year I'll pass on'em, and grow another Roma instead.

I'm kinda curious here, like Phish said, I love ketchup, salsa, fried green tomato's, and Clausen used to make dilled green tomato's that were the best thing I've ever had pickled, but I can't eat a raw tomato to save my life, disgusting. Is that messed up or what...

Must be the high estrogen levels coursing through your veins there Sally! :11:

I picked up my tomatos at Home Depot. I couldn't tell you how many I've gotten. a hundred maybe? I think the key for me was amping up the heat units. My yard is on a slight south facing slope. I bought these huge black resin pots at costco, placed them on the drivewat, right against the house. I cant muster up any more heat than that short of a greenhouse. I am planning on getting a greenhouse up and going next year. Another important part has been feeding them about once every two weeks....

I planted my fall garden and everything has sprouted. Hopefully the garden part two will be as productive as part one was!

My wife eats enough of them nasty red things to make up for me gagging on one here and there.
LIke hairlip said, they are just disgusting. funny thing is i can eat a raw oyster easily, chew it up and all. Not a tomato though.

Maybe its because an oyster looks really close to my other favorite thing to eat.
