Project update.
Project update.
Spent the weekend on a tractor cleaning up the 1.5 acres that I had excavated last spring. I leveled with a box scraper, removed debris, cleaned around the pond, plowed and smoothed the ground to get ready to plant. I'll be watching the weather closely looking for the next period of rain. Right before the wet stuff hits, I'll be laying down several types of seed. I purchased some biologic mix for the edges to keep the deer well fed, clover on the area sloping to the pond, and pasture grass in the middle. We plan on purchasing a calf next spring, and may raise a pig or two as well. I still need to fence the pasture in, but will wait until next year for that. I plan on transplanting a ton of small trees from around the rest of the property to offer shade for the pond and pasture. I put about 100 bluegill into the pond ranging from about an inch to some really good sized ones. They will grow fast with all the bugs and tadpoles in there. I also dug a pit blind for hunting ducks off it. We are also planning on raising christmas trees, not for profit, but mainly for family and friends. I'll purchase about 25 nobles, grands, and doug firs a year and keep staggering them. Its been fun planning and doing the work, I could've lived without cutting, splitting, and stacking all that wood with my bad back but we put up about 4 cords of maple.
I also made a "drive around" so I dont have to back my boats in anymore. Getting two loads of gravel for that at the end of the month, then its off to build my outbuilding, someday when I'm not so broke! Its been tough missing the great run of coho in the salt. I will be hitting them in the rivers soon though. It'll be nice to look out the window and see the green pasture and christmas trees.
Someday I'll sit down and load some before and after pix.

Re: Project update.
Another project update..
The pond is nearly full to the top. It is about 7 feet deep in the middle. One day last week we had three inches of rain, and it raised my water level nearly 2 feet! When the water table jumps up, the pond fills fast. My biologic seed has sprouted and hopefully we'll stay warm enough for a couple more weeks and it will take hold. I also planted clover and a low growing "orchard grass" around the edges and they are coming up too. Tonight my son and I worked on the pit blind. We've been getting some mallards coming in and out, not a ton, but they will come with cooler weather. Raked a ton of leaves off the yard and ran them through the mulcher for the garden. planted 180 cloves of garlic and the 2-3 inches of leaf mulch will keep it safe over the winter. I think I'm about done for the year... time to find some early steelhead!
