I'd seriously keep Singletary. That dude is the man. The second he benched that primadonna player and sent him to the showers, I was a fan!

You know, before the Willingham disaster, I had the opinion a coaches discipline, demeanor, or overall attitude, has little to do with a teams success or failure. Willinghams absence of emotion, IMO, had a measurable negative impact on the Huskies. It drove me nuts watching the guy coach a game. Like watching paint dry.

I had the same reaction as elkscrooge. Singletary with his fiery, somewhat crazed behavior is the opposite case study of Willingham. Go back to the days of Lombardi, he was a strict disciplinarian, was successful, yet his QB Bart Star, (again with an opposite shtick), had similar success without the overbearing/ intense style. What was similar between Lombardi and Star other than success? You have Parcells, Coughlin (SP?), and others as examples of hard asses with proven results, and in contrast, plenty of guys that don't cheerlead at all.

I've come to the conclusion a coaches attitude can have a tangible affect on the team, but, doesn't necessarily mean it has to. And, there's different approaches for different people. I think that emotion is critical to success in football, Emotion on a team needs to come from somewhere, be it player(s) or coaches. Without it, well, you have the Mariners.

Back to Singletary, bottom line, I just don't see him as a true Representative for the Bay Area culture, nor do I see the necessary attraction between a sophisticated 9'er ownership and a tuff guy like Singletary. Nope, looks like Holmgren for the niners.

If you want a coach who represents Bay area culture, then you better hire Richard Simmons. As for emotion and coaching particularly in Willingham's case, there isn't a single guy, not even Lombardi, who could have won with that team. Now Willingham recruited them and he is rightly responsible for the outcome but sometimes a team just plain sucks too.

Lord help me but, I think I have to pick the 49ers to win this game. They are the only team to win a game on the East Coast this season and I think they get another. Man this hurts. Embarassed
