Attention all you gardeners...

Post by Elkrun on 15th October 2009, 6:18 pm

Now is the time to get you garlic for next summers crop! If you haven't tried garlic fresh from the garden, you dont know what you're missing! Unlike the bland grocery store bulbs, fresh home-grown garlic is amazing! There are loads of different varieties to try. Some very hot and spicy, others more mild, giant elephant garlic, there are over 200 types! It's easy to grow but hard to find planting bulbs if you wait too long. I'll get mine in the ground the this weekend. I'll cover it with a couple inches of leaf mulch and them I wont have to do anything until about June. Then I'll cut the "scapes" (a curly section the eventually holds a flower, when harvested its like a garlicy green onion...very good for any dish you'd put onions or garlic in.) to focus the plants energy on bulb growth. It harvests in July. We hang it to dry. You can braid the softneck varieties, or just hang them in the garage in a bunch. Walk out and pull a couple bulbs in whenever you cook. There is nothing like it!

Heres a couple sites to get you started. If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask.

Too many veggies? Whats that? I STILL have tomatos ripe on the vine. Going to pick the rest and make spaghetti sauce this weekend. Will be adding a lot of garlic too! Cant decide on razor clamming, mushrooming, or hunting this weekend. Could take the boy out looking for a deer too. Its good to have options!

We planted our garlic last weekend. We planted well over 250 cloves from our crop that we had picked on July 25. We give a bunch of it away each year and still have plenty left over for replanting and for our needs.

We plant it along both sides of the garden to help keep out some of the bugs that don't like its smell...or its taste. We eat a ton of it! Last year our garden didn't do that great because it stayed to damn damp for to damn long down here. We didn't get our soil worked up along our fence because our tilter on our tractor couldn't get as close as we wanted to along our garden fence. This year we bought a small 4 cycle Honda tilter and it worked supper along the fence where we plant our garlic at. This will be the first year that we have added the chicken crap to our compose, so we are looking to see some better results in next garden.

I wanted to get mine in today... Thts not going to happen! It is a frigging moonsoon out there. The plus side is my new pond is about three quarters full and the ducks are already on it! After I harvest my garlic this summer, I planed my fall lettuce in the same spot. The lettuce was thick with aphids... The garlic must drive them off becuase they weren't there for the first couple batches of greens. Hopefully I can get mine in tomorrow.
