I think the tribal cops are dead wrong, and caught dead to rights...what happens to them is another story, but I'd be dusting off my lawsuit defense clothing if I were them...

Well in my opinion it turned out better than it could have. Because if you point a firearm at some folks, there can't be any questions. If there are questions, as there were in this case, I reserve the right to protect me and mine.

I had a WDFW enforcement officer that had a bone with me for years, bust into our camp Dukes of Hazard style, lights a blazing with a King County Sheriff in tow. Got out and drew his fukin weapon. It pissed me off to no end, I can't fully explain how angry I was. We had legally tagged meat hanging in camp. We were totally legal. The Sheriff did not draw his weapon. He stayed back and let the WDFW dick make a total ass of himself. When it was done, I let the sheriff know I was not happy with the WDFW dick. It must have struck the sheriff the same way, he chewed the state officer a new one, and I kid you not, he roosted the WDFW officer and his rig when he left.

Think about it, you're in the field, on private property, on a legal kill..... Why you'd have your 2 year old with you I have no idea, but somebody comes up screaming and yelling at you, you see guns, it's game time boys and girls. The tribal game employee's were very fortunate they came upon who they did. Had it been me, well, you never know. If there was any question, the result could have been different. I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Why come on someone in that situation guns drawn screaming and yelling? That's rookie bullshit! I don't care who's doing it, you better have a good reason to point a gun at me. Being a cop is a tough job, and I've had the pleasure of knowing some real good ones. Good cops don't put your life in danger to protect themselves, unless there's good reason.

Heads should roll over this. I agree, those who were detained just won the lotto.

Absolutely nothing will happen. Its their "usual hunting grounds". They are immune from the law.

Having jurisdiction to enforce game laws there doesn't make them immune from prosecution or lawsuits when they act out of bounds.

"The right of taking fish, at all usual and accustomed grounds and stations, is further secured to said Indians in common with all citizens of the Territory, and of erecting temporary houses for the purpose of curing, [b]together with the privilege of hunting, gathering roots and berries, and pasturing their horses on open and unclaimed lands: Provided, however, That they shall not take shellfish from any beds staked or cultivated by citizens, and that they shall alter all stallions not intended for breeding-horses, and shall keep up and confine the latter."

I dont see how a piece of private property on Hood Canal can be called "open and unclaimed land".

Me neither, but they are claiming it. Given the state's fear of the tribes, I'd bet they walk free and clear. In fact, I'd guess they find a way to lay blame on the hunting party in the process. I guess I've become a little jaded.

Port Gamble S'Klallam Natural Resources Director Paul McCollum has said that his officers were acting properly.

I don't think so. If they were on private property, (tribal officers) they were trespassing. cut and dried. I don't care who you are, that's trespassing and they weren't acting in self defense..that's clear. So a guy and his 2 year old son were poaching? again, don't think so...especially with a special permit that was verifiable. These 2 idiots should be fired and fined. It's about time for someone to take this to a higher court, and I hope they do.

I'm still trying to figure out why a 2 year old was on a hunt nate. I'd like to see that report. 400 pages tells me we have an issue that if not addressed, will get worse, for somebody anywhoo....

By the way nate, how many tags do you fill a year?

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't there a bill introduced last year that would give tribal police the authority to use the same powers off reservations as the local law enforcement has? I don't know if they had passed the bill, but I do remember reading it!

HL a 2 year old on a hunt is kinda a dumb idea i do agree, although, its not always dangerous if payed attention to...i cant legally hunt yet either, but that doesnt mean anything... i know were blacktails are at, nice ones too, i know were nice elk are at as well, and throw in some cats, couple bear, thats all within 5 miles of each other...when i had my big toy, when we would go over to my buddys cabin in vantage there was a family friend over there that had a farm, coyotes were killing his chickens, and goats, we called the state patrol, and they said we could shoot them if it continued,we also asked the local warden in frenchman hills, and he said the same thing... what we couldnt do, was lure them in with calls or anything, that would have been illegal, but with 20 goats and a shitload of chickens around, it was like a pop corn machine for them.... needless to say i shot quite a few for him over the years...some of them were over 500 yards away...7mm rem mag baby, nothing gets away from that beast...ive shot rocks in north bend that were probably 1200+ yards away with that gun...but i was pretty consistant with 600 yard shots....
