By 9/30/09 the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery had collected over 4 times what they need to meet coho production goals. 2009 looks like a two-peat of 2008.

Nearly 13K in the trap before the start of October. They only need around 3K to make their coho salmon.

Yeah... I don't know what it is about that hatchery but they make the bejesus belts out of CR late stock (Type N as listed in the report) coho. In 2008 the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery trapped over 70K and again only needed to use a few thousand for spawning.

LOF ?, from what i figure is that we the sports this year failed to catch about 90k hatchery coho in the ocean and at bouy 10 that were allocated to us and ended up giving the gillnetters the esa take that we would have used to catch that many fish, so if the gillnetters went to a method where the release mortality rate was equal to sports isnt it safe to say that they could catch and keep those 90k hatchery fish on the columbia ? , plus i`m pretty sure the state/tribal agreement is to make sure that atleast 1/2 of the upper river run of coho passes the dam so if the gillnetters did switch to a new method lets say with a 10 percent mortality release rate how many hatchery coho on a year like do you think the new fad commercials could catch and keep out of the columbia if they crafted a season to target excess hatchery coho at the tributary mouths like the cowlitz for example and still make sure they meet the tribal deal and meet hatchery escapement ??

To give life you gotta take life. There ain’t no other way.

Set up a wheel (or whatever works) at the mouth of the Cowlitz and Lewis that has a released mortality rate near zero (or close to it) and it’ll be the end of the recreational coho fisheries inside those tributaries.

Set it up lower in the CR and it’ll be the end of every recreational fishery above.

If NSIA and CCA truly desire they be the left hand of God... they should be wary. Being a true apostle carries with it great responsibility. Not being an outright sucker chief among them. Not letting their foolish prejudice blind them to the terror that the future yields.

Coho are just down right weird boater. In freshwater they seem to have bites that oscillate wildly from one year to the next. Abundance is never really a good indicator of what the catch expectation should be. They’re unpredictable. They’re unstable.

Chinook, on the other “hand of God”, that is another fable. Much more dependable bites.

Like tarot cards. You can hear just about what they are going to sing months before they sing it.

Hey boater... I nominate you NSIA/CCA rep (Todd as your second). Get rid of Liz/the 6 figure dude.

Welcome the usher... boater.

The true left hand of God.

Right on LOF !!!!! cheers

None of the WDFW staff in region 5 understand or even know the real history or run timing of the true Cowlitz Coho stocks, or which stocks returned "early" and which stocks returned "late"

This is yet just another reason why the HSRG is so full of crap! They, as researchers, and so called scientists, should be the first ones to know and to understand the real history of the Cowlitz Coho stocks. But they don't!

This group in my opinion is simply nothing more then just another "circus jerk" of people who are put there for reasons that are being as obvious as it should be.

Yeah well, none of the people qualified to do it ever end up holding positions like that. They're too busy listening to chinook love songs...cough cough, half laugh..... :35:
