The cable is history
The cable is history
I tried out the 200# Power Pro on one of my Scottys last weekend. I like it so much I'm going to re-spool the other Scotty with some Power Pro this week. Its good stuff. :17:

300' of Power Pro was $25.
150' of the Mason brand cable that was supposed to solve all my problems was $20. It lasted less than 6 trips and is so kinked up it won't come off the spool anymore.
So for 2x the length of PP it was an additional $5.
Factor in you don't need to buy the terminal kits anymore to use the braid and it ends up cheaper than the cable.

Plus no black box ... (not that I ever used one)
No possibility of kinking
Will never rust
Issues can be fixed with a knife and not cutters
The list is big.
Cable sucks.

but doesnt it eventually wear out as well, with salt and such? do you have to check the knot on the weight alot?im sure them rigger balls and pancakes and such arent cheap...also, why not use 300 pound, or is it not needed? i just figure that losing stuff like that wouldnt be cheap, and steel cable is deffinately stronger, but if it kinks and such, i get your guys point, just asking, as we might start trying one, i dont know how to salmon fish really in the salt, so i figure, with what i do know, and even a manual rigger, my chances will be alot higher...

If the knot gets to where it appears weak ... cut it off and re-tie it. Total loss of about 1" of braid

Everything wears out eventually. I've got the same spool of Power Pro on my jig rods that I've had for 3-4 years now,its still going strong. As far as checking the knot, its way easier to re-tie a Palomar knot than it is to crimp on a new terminal end on cable.I can re-tie a Palomar knot in 10 seconds with no tools required. The reason I bought a 300' length is so that I can retie when needed. I never fish more than about 150' so I'll have plenty to work with before I need to re-spool.
How can 150# cable be stronger than 200# Power Pro?

oh i didnt know it was 150 pound cable, i just figured it was cable, like a 3/8s cable has a thousands rating, rigger cable is way smaller, just figured it was like 900 or 1k plus...yeah i think ill go braid as well, how much weight for the ball do you need to fish hood canal?

I run 12lb pancake balls. If 15lb balls were more readily available,I'd probably run them.

cool thanks you guys, we dont get hammered much, so im pretty sure the 12s would work ok in smooth water, is tuff line equivalent to power pro? or should i just stick with what you guys are using?

I use 150# power pro. Even thinner, plenty strong, less blowback. I like to troll fast!

Guess I am in the minority. I tried it and hated it! I noticed it frays easy and after reading some horrible reports and multiple ball loss from it failing. I went back to cable. Too each his own. I love cable.

The only ball I lost this summer came from slamming it into a pinnacle at Salt Creek. Would have lost it using anything. I use 15lb balls in heavy current, and 12 lb pancakes any other time. No frays, kinks, knots, or failures. Nothing but fish. Lots of them!
