Mitch 184 - your carb issue...

"So last friday out on the skagit my kicker, '05 Yami F8, starting acting funny and then eventually died. After pumping the bulb a few times it will start and idle, but then dies as soon as I put it into gear or rev it up. I'm thinking hopefully just maybe a fuel filter but maybe a fuel pump??? Anyone have any advice or an opinion??"

Yoru float in the carb is either sunk or the needle and seat is stuck. Simple fix. Let me know if ya need help :60:

You should change the fuel filer yearly regardless but I doubt that is the issue this time.

Chuck my man,
Thanks for the input. As it turned out it was just a simple fuel filter issue. Bought 2 of them and was good to go sunday.

On another note.... Not sure if you've owned a Yami kicker, but mine smokes all the time. I followed the break-in procedure to the 'T' but the thing smokes constantly. Just burns oil all day long whether its at an idle or I'm really into it???? I called the dealer and they said that its a problem with 4 stroke kickers because they don't get hot enough to properly seat the rings. Seems like there should be something I could do.

Was the filter eh? Nice catch. That would always be the start but if that isnt it....go to the carb.

As for the smoke issue. Are you running hot box and if so is it running off the HOT side of the head? This caused all kids of issues as it wont let the motor reach operating temp. It shouldnt "smoke" but if it isnt getting warm you are not running efficient at all and could be a cause. Is it black smoke or Blue?

Black - cold engine, choke sticking, over carbureted fuel
Blue - oil getting past rings, seals etc. or low engine temp.

Chuck,
I don't have a hot water sink or anything. It's just a standard Yami 4 stroke 8 horse non-high thrust. It is a constant blue smoke and burns oil for sure. Always has since I broke it in 2 years ago. Dealer never really wanted to deal with it. Not sure if I should run an additive or what???

you shouldnt have to run any additives in it and it shouldnt smoke. Its a 4 stroke. Sounds like a lazy dealer.

Either oil is seaping past the valve seals or the rings. Although neither is good ... neither is really bad unless you are using a LOT of oil?? Do you end up fouling plugs?

I seem to have to add oil every couple trips. I've never overfilled it, maybe ran it low once or twice. Usually when the smoking dies off, means its time to add oil.

Mitch, Chuck is the man when it comes to outboard moters, with that said I had a 8 hp yamaha on my old boat and I once had the same problem and I had a crack in my fuel hose and once the motor lost suction it would stall, thes a small chance you fixed the air leak in the hose when you replaced the filter,,,DJ

Only way to confirm this is to do a coompression test.

Test both cyl's and record the lbs; add a few drops of oil and retest.

If pressure goes up then you have bad rings; no change then your valve seals are poop.

rings = $$$
seals = $

What year motor?

Sean... hopefully your F8 is still under warranty?

Like Chuck said, 4 strokes should NOT smoke OR burn oil... especially one that new. I'd be takin' back to the dealer and makin' a warranty claim if'n I were you.
